Stadium lights are operated perhaps 150 to 200 hours a year, which is significantly less than the estimated 3000+ hours in indoor sports facilities, such as gymnasiums. Rapidly advancing technology is allowing LED lighting to become cost competitive with high-intensity-discharge (HID) metal halide lamps. In the decades to come, East Side may convert its metal halide stadium lights to LED. Currently, sports field lighting is metal halide HID.
However, energy efficiency is still important. Metal halide HID lighting is made energy efficient primarily by mitigating the amount of light wasted by each fixture. Precisely engineered reflectors capture the light emitted from the lamp's four-inch arc tube and direct (and redirect) it toward the field of play. The reflectors also ensure that light doesn't spill toward neighboring homes and properties.
Please operate stadium lights only when needed. After stadium use, operate the lower-intensity clean-up lights for staff to clean up and exit the stadium.
