Stadium Lighting

What are Stadium Lights?

What are Stadium Lights? iconWhat are Stadium Lights?title

There is a dramatic difference between night and day in terms of illumination.  High noon on a sunny day provides 8,000 footcandles of light to the football field. (A foot candle is a unit of illumination equal to that given by one candle at a distance of one foot). Stadium lights provide adequate illumination to play sports at night.

Our Stadium lights are comprised of metal halide HID (high-intensity-discharge) lamps - which have been the sports lighting standard for decades - plus several other components:

Sports Field Lights
Sports field lights for football and track illumination for night play.
  • 480 volt, 1500 watt metal halide lamps
  • mounted near the top of the 80' poles
  • football field
    • 50 footcandles average
    • maximum to minimum uniformity ratio:  2:1
    • average to minimum uniformity ratio:  1.5:1
  • track
    • 20 footcandles average
    • maximum to minimum uniformity ratio:  10:1
    • average to minimum uniformity ratio:  3.5:1

Clean-Up Lights
LED lights on each pole provide general illumination for cleaning and exiting the Stadium.
  • 277 or 480 volt, 140 watt LED lights
  • mounted at 30'

Emergency Egress Lights
Battery-powered emergency egress LED lights on each pole activate in the event of a power outage, allowing for safe exiting from the Stadium.
  • 120 or 277 volt, 120 watt LED lights
  • mounted at 20'

Poles
  • four 80' poles

Power Center and Misc.
  • freestanding power center, cited in the Stadium facility on a concrete pad within a fenced enclosure
  • underground power and signal conduits and conductors
  • power transformer (as needed)
  • lighting control switches (all campuses)
  • digital controls (certain campuses only at this time)
Energy Use

Energy Use iconEnergy Usetitle

Stadium lights are operated perhaps 150 to 200 hours a year, which is significantly less than the estimated 3000+ hours in indoor sports facilities, such as gymnasiums. Rapidly advancing technology is allowing LED lighting to become cost competitive with high-intensity-discharge (HID) metal halide lamps. In the decades to come, East Side may convert its metal halide stadium lights to LED. Currently, sports field lighting is metal halide HID.

However, energy efficiency is still important. Metal halide HID lighting is made energy efficient primarily by mitigating the amount of light wasted by each fixture. Precisely engineered reflectors capture the light emitted from the lamp's four-inch arc tube and direct (and redirect) it toward the field of play. The reflectors also ensure that light doesn't spill toward neighboring homes and properties.

Please operate stadium lights only when needed. After stadium use, operate the lower-intensity clean-up lights for staff to clean up and exit the stadium.

Metal halide HID lights require about 20 minutes of warm-up time to illuminate at full intensity.

The stadium lights at James Lick, Santa Teresa and Silver Creek have been outfitted with Musco Lighting's Control-Link® control system.  Control-Link® allows you to schedule your stadium lights online, via smart phone, or by telephone.  You can also turn them on/off manually with Lighting Controls Switches at the electrical sub-distribution equipment. Control-Link schedules will only activate if the Lighting Controls Switches are in the "AUTO" position.

This Control-Link® User Guide will help you understand the features of Control-Link® digital controls system.

If you have been given permissions, you can go to the Control-Link® website at www.control-link.com.
  • Manage your schedules on the My Schedules tab
  • View lamp outages, controls issues, service call status, and energy usage on the Facility Management tab
  • View and download reports on hours usage, hours saved from early offs, and usage schedule detail on the Reports tab
  • See online training videos, step by step instructions, and directions to control lights from your mobile device on the Help tab
There is a toll-free telephone number at the top center of each page on the Control-Link® site; you can call that number for Musco technical support 24/7/365.

User permissions to Control-Link® are managed by the Interim Director of Capital Planning & Design, Julio Lucas, lucasj@esuhsd.org, 408-347-5102.
