• Damp mop, bucket, wringer
• Putty knife for non-carpeted floor
• Utility knife for carpeted floors
• Carpet spotting material
• Wet floor sign(s)
• Nonmetallic ladder

1. Change light bulbs as needed.
2. If a light fixture needs a ballast or other maintenance beyond light bulbs, tag with blue tape.
3. Clean cobwebs.
4. Remove large pieces of litter from floor.
5. Empty trash and replace can liners.
6. Complete high and low dusting of horizontal and vertical surfaces. Focus on door and window casings. Include furniture.
7. Spot clean stains on wall surface areas if necessary, clean door(s) if necessary.
8. Clean windows and display cases if necessary.
9. Dust mop all hard floor surfaces, sweeping material toward the door.
10. Vacuum all carpeted floor surfaces.
11. Spot (damp) mop all hard floor surfaces if necessary.
12. Spot clean stains on carpeted floor surfaces if necessary.
13. Order (arrange) room furniture.
14. Secure the area (close and lock windows, lights off, close and lock doors and gates).

• Protective hand wear:  non-sterile latex or cloth gloves
• Protective mask (if needed for dust)

• Develop a “work flow” as you clean hallways and lobbies:
  • Clean from top to bottom. Start with light fixtures and other ceiling elements.  Move to furniture and display case dusting. Then clean the floors.
  • Move floor surface dirt from the far end of the hallway or lobby towards the entrance door area.
  • Move furniture back into place after cleaning, or alternate the placement of the furniture on an every other day basis.

• Spot cleaning tips: 
  • Use putty knife (on hard floors, walls, desks, and other hard surfaces) or utility knife (on carpet, fabric, other soft surfaces) to remove gum, dried stains, and other surface dirt that a broom or vacuum will not pick up.
  • Use freeze spray to spot freeze gum that is stuck on carpet, then remove with knife.

• Be sure the area is neatly arranged and secured when cleaning is completed.

Upon completion of this work activity, the hallways and lobbies must be clean and safe. Floor surfaces must be free of dirt, stains, or other accumulations. Flat and vertical surfaces are to be free of dust, dirt, stains, bodily fluids and graffiti. Trash is to be emptied. Light fixtures have been relamped as needed, or tagged for maintenance service. Hallways and lobbies are to be secured after cleaning.

By understanding the answer to the question "What is Clean?" for hallways and lobbies, supervisors and employees know what is expected of them. How well a hallway and lobby's cleanliness meets this cleaning standard can be measured using these four categories:

2. Needs Improvement
3. Meets Standard
4. Exceeds Standards
