Checking In, Orientation and Checking Out for Substitute Custodians

  • Go to the school main office.  The main office is usually near the flag pole, and has identifying signage.
  • Let the office staff know that you are checking in for your substitute custodial assignment, and ask them to page the Head Custodian (if day shift) or Night Lead Custodian (if night shift).
  • Head or Lead Custodian will meet substitute custodian at main office, escort to assigned work area, provide orientation.

At the beginning of the work shift, the Head or Lead Custodian will orient the substitute custodian on these things: 

  • Issue a set of keys that must be returned at the end of the work shift.
  • Issue a two-way radio for communication, and provide training on how to use it.  The radio must be returned at the end of the work shift.
  • Walk through work area, explaining what tasks the substitute custodian will do during their shift:
    • custodial closet for location of equipment, tools, cleaning products, paper products
    • personal protective equipment 
  • Exchange phone numbers.
  • Discuss break times.
  • Show location of Custodial Office, for these activities:
    • personal lockers
    • refrigerator
    • breaks
    • submit keys, radio at end of shift
    • complete timesheet
    • debriefing

At the end of the work shift, the substitute custodian must check out:
  • Go to the Custodial Office to meet with the Head or Lead Custodian.
  • Submit keys and radio.
  • Fill out timecard.
  • Debrief on work assignment.
